The Food Safety Modernization Act is still under construction:
Earlier this month, FDA announced that it will be revising and seeking additional public comment on portions of the animal food regulations this summer along with the revisions to regulations for produce safety and preventive controls for human food. This will provide an important opportunity to consider and comment on the overlap and interactions between the three sets of rules and their impact on farmers.
It was crucial that individuals and organizations all around the country, especially small farmers and food systems advocates, comment on the rules and help the FDA understand some of the good things and some of the problems with the rules. Stay tuned to this space and NSAC’s website for further information on how to get involved in the next round of comments. We expect to do more letter writing “parties” in Michigan this year!
