Check out this article on Beginning Farmers and Farm Bill:
The problem of needing new farmers has been much discussed, but you wouldn’t know it by the behavior of the Senate Agriculture Committee when they passed their version of the farm bill in late April. They cut the program most dedicated to supporting beginning farmers — the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program — by about half! That’s hardly the way to demonstrate strong support for the future of agriculture.
The farm bill is being considered on the Senate floor this week. Several amendments take the issue on, but one that has momentum is sponsored by Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio. Wisconsin Sens. Herb Kohl and Ron Johnson need to recognize the glaring deficiency in the Senate Agriculture Committee bill and support this amendment to help our nation’s aspiring farmers get a foothold.
